The National Ozone Unit (NOU) of Belize was established in year 2000, within the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment.
The NOU was established to perform the role of focal point for all activities related to the Montreal Protocol. This role was enforced with the passage of the 2002 Amendments to the Pollution Regulations, which incorporated the duties with respect to the Ozone Programme in Belize into the roles and responsibilities of the Department of the Environment.
Belize acceded the Montreal Protocol, together with its Copenhagen and London Amendments on 9th January 1998. The country signed the Instrument of Acceptance of both the Montreal and Beijing Amendments of the Montreal Protocol on 4th January 2008. Up-to-date, Belize has ratified the Montreal Protocol and its four amendments.
Belize is a Party to the Montreal Protocol, operating under Article 5 and is, hence, eligible to receive technical and financial assistance from the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol.
The intention of this website is to raise awareness to the general public about the Montreal Protocol at the National and International Level. Its purpose is to educate students, teachers, refrigeration technicians, importers and retailers of refrigerants and refrigeration equipment, stakeholders and the general public about Belize’s obligations under the Montreal Protocol, and what is being done locally for Belize to comply with those obligations.
